JAHPSA Fall Celebration
Japanese American Health Professional Student Association will be having our Kouyou Fall Celebration! event on Tuesday, November 24th, in the Golden Gates/City Lights room in Millberry Union, from noon-1. Kouyou can be translated literally as “red leaves” or “changing colors.” Between the stifling humidity of the summer and the chill of winter, fall in Japan transforms the countrysides and mountains to landscapes of red, orange, yellow, and gold. At the event, we will be providing bento lunches, Japanese drinks and snack, as well as having presentations on flower arrangements and Japanese calligraphy. All of the UCSF community is invited to create and take home their own flower arrangement as well as have their names translated and painted into Japanese calligraphy.
Photography Exhibit
A university-wide student photography exhibit will be on display in the Faculty Alumni House from November 6-February 5, 2010. The exhibit includes work from 44 students in over 14 different programs in the university. There will be a reception/mixer/social to celebrate the exhibit on December 1 from 5-8 p.m.
Diagnosing Difference:
The Acclaimed Documentary On “Gender Identity Disorder”
Friday, November 20, noon, Health Sciences West 301
In this documentary, 13 diverse transgender people discuss how it feels to have their gender identity labeled by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as a “gender identity disorder.” Using the diagnosis as a departure point, the interviewees debunk myths about transgender identities, challenge stereotypical gender expectations, and offer insights into the terms and language used to describe transgender lives.
