ASUC November Meeting By Anh Thuy Nguyen The Associate Students of UCSF (ASUCSF) held its last meeting of the quarter on November 5. Present were the ASUCSF Executive board, presidents from each professional school, and representatives from various Registered Campus Organizations (RCOs). The main issues discussed were wireless Internet access on campus and the campus-wide calendar. One of the chief complaints of students at UCSF is the unreliability or lack of wireless Internet access from many parts of campus. The school has been tackling this problem and plans to have it fixed by the end of the year. Areas included in the plan include all the classrooms, main lecture halls, common areas, Laurel Heights and Mission Bay. In addition to installing 230 access points for wireless Internet, UCSF will be seeing many more technological updates. Jon Showstack, from the Office of Academic and Administrative Information Systems (OAAIS), commented that over the past two years, UCSF has decided to put a huge amount of resources into technological upgrades from updated systems in academic affairs to new systems for research for faculty. More information on this can be found at http://strategy.ucsf.edu. For the past two months, ASUC has been testing a calendar program called CalendarWiz for student events and programs, responding to the need to find information on all student events in one place. However, the current calendar from CalendarWiz has not been highly utilized because it is not user friendly. UCSF is now looking at using the same calendar program as UC Berkeley. This calendar can be used as both a centralized and decentralized calendar, where the person posting for each event can decide how broadly they want it to be shared. Also, several separate calendars can be maintained while still being linked together. ASUC hopes to have this new calendar by the beginning of Winter Quarter. October has been a great month for the different schools of UCSF. The School of Pharmacy had its homecoming this past month with alumni from the Classes of 1945, 1968, 1991 present. The School of Dentistry reported being very satisfied with the job that Interim Dean John Featherstone has been doing. The School of Medicine also had an eventful month with their annual talent show being a huge success. The RCO’s have also been busy this past month. The Native American Health Alliance participated in a health fair. The Chinese Health Professional Student Association has been hard at work organizing a Medical Mandarin elective for this quarter. Also, the Vietnamese Student Alliance will be having their annual Fall Banquet on November 19th which includes their new officer elections. The Korean American Health Professional Student Association also had fun activities for the month of October, including a movie social. The past month has been an eventful month for ASUC. October events included a successful Ice Cream Social and Voter Registration as well as Culture Card sales. Also, this was the first month that ASUC held the Complaint Campaign to encourage students to raise their voices regarding campus issues they felt were unsatisfactory and needed attention. There was a huge response and ASUC is committed to work with the school to make sure student’s voices are heard. ASUC is continuing the Complain Campaign for November, so if you have a complaint and would like a chance to win a $5 Bear Hug gift certificate to UCSF retailers, email ASUCSF@ucsf.edu by midnight November 19, 2007.
