ASUC January Meeting

By Anh Thuy Nguyen
Staff Writer

The Associate Students of UCSF (ASUCSF) held its first meeting of winter quarter last week on January 14th. Present were the ASUCSF Executive board, which includes elected officers, presidents from each professional school, and representatives from Registered Campus Organizations (RCO’s). The main issues discussed were vendor services at the Mission Bay campus and updates from the library.

As the Mission Bay campus develops, many new retail vendors have opened to cater to the needs of the growing community. All the new food services on the ground floor are open and operational, including Peasant Pies, Subway and Caffe Terzetto. Vendor Services is continuing to work on filling the service sites on 3rd Street. There are plans to include a post office, hair salon and bank.

Currently, Vendor Services is working on increasing the number ATMs on the Mission Bay campus. There are plans for a room which will house potentially three new machines, two of which will be for Wells Fargo and Bank of America. Although there is no definitive deadline set for the completion of this project, the goal is to have the ATMs ready by Spring/Summer 2008. Until the project is completed, there is still ATM access as Genentech Hall.

Gail Persily of Library Services came to last week’s ASUC meeting to discuss library issues raised from the ASUCSF/GSA Complaint Campaign. Safety at the library was a concern for many students. Since the campaign, the library has hired security guards to be at the library from 3 p.m. to closing every day.

Students had asked for restrictions on public entrance to the library because of safety issues. As Kalmanovitz Library is a public library, there cannot be restrictions for UC-only access throughout the day. However, it is possible for there to be restrictions at certain times. Library Services hopes implementation of such hours would be one solution to the safety issue. In order to limit library access to students at scheduled UC-only hours, the library is considering the use of UCSF IDs for proxy card entrance at the door.

Another issue that students brought up during the complaint campaign is that of limited study space for UCSF students. Although Library Services assessed this and did not find data to support it, they are planning to add seating and remove the stacks and collections from the 5th floor East Asian Collection room to convert it into a UCSF-only study area. In addition to changes on the 5th floor, the 2nd floor is also planned to undergo renovations to add general assignment classrooms.

The cold temperature of the library has also been a problem for many students. Last spring, the library increased the temperature to 70°. However, the library needs feedback! Is the temperature still too cold? Issues about this can be discussed with library personnel or emailed to the ASUCSF/GSA Complaint Campaign at ASUCSF@ucsf.edu

The library conducted a study on the availability of library study guides for medical students and found that there was need to change the policy on study guide check-out. Before, study guides could be checked out for two hours. Now, they will be available on reserve for a 3 day reserve time. The library will be doing a similar study for the other schools, as well. In addition, they have ordered the most recent study guide editions which will be kept at the reserve desk. As new editions come in, older editions will be moved to the stacks.

The past month has been full of exciting events for the different RCO’s on campus. Chicanos in Health Education is planning an all-school health fair and is looking for students from all schools to be part of next year’s leadership. The Black Student Health Alliance is busy getting ready for Black History Month in February. Some events planned are Afro Fusion on February 8 and social on February 28. Be on the lookout for a schedule of all events to be sent to all schools.

The LGBT Student Organization also has their hands full coordinating their winter quarter elective. The highly anticipated Mosaic Culture Show scheduled for February 29 is also underway with the collaboration of the Native American Health Alliance and AIDS Action Network. Another show not to be missed is the Vietnamese Student Association cultural show on February 25.
