Essential Core Teaching Awards Given

By Arul Thangavel
Staff Writer

students and faculty pose after the awardsThe Essential Core is a critical component of first- and second-year medical education. UCSF’s innovative curriculum organizes the complexities of medicine topically, teaching students about the normal and diseased organ together rather than by following the canonical division of normal organ function in the first year with disease addressed in the second year. This approach to medical education, now increasingly common among medical schools, requires a different sort of teaching than more traditional curricula; faculty from the department of pharmacology, for example, must now not only educate students about complex drugs, but integrate it into the overall curriculum. Anatomists must take on some of the roles of physiologists, biochemists must be intimately acquainted with pharmacology and physician educators must be conscious that students are learning everything in parallel rather than in series.

It is not an easy task to be a teacher in such a complex environment, but UCSF educators do it wonderfully. The various blocks that comprise the Essential Core – Cardiology, Respiratory, Renal, Metabolism & Nutrition, Brain, Mind & Behavior in just the first year – contain a plethora of excellent lecturers and small group leaders and every year some of these excellent instructors are honored with an Excellence in Teaching Award on behalf of the first and second year medical school class.

In contrast to other teaching awards at UCSF, such as the Kaiser Awards, these awards are chosen completely by first- and second-year students. Many of the prizes reflected the varied nature of UCSF’s medical education, with awards for Inspirational Teacher, Innovative Teacher, Commitment to Teaching, Excellence in Small Group Instruction and outstanding single lecture and series of lectures. While the majority of winners were professors here at UCSF, there were medical student recipients as well, acknowledging the crucial role peers play in education at UCSF through programs such as the Medical Scholars Program, which allows second year students to teach first year students complex topics such as anatomy. Physicians from the community were also honored, especially for their role as mentors through the Foundations of Patient Care portion of the Essential Core curriculum. Separate awards were given for first and second year educators.

A student-run ceremony, with the crucial help of Joseph Crawford in the Dean’s Office of the School of Medicine, formally presented recipients with their awards. Dr. David Irby presented winners with a plaque recognizing their service to the UCSF community and recipients gave short acceptance speeches. A complete list of recipients is listed below.
