Dental Students Get First-Hand View of True Life
The True Life Series this Fall was hosted by the ADEA UCSF Chapter and the Office of Career and Professional Development (OCPD). The featured speaker was Dr. Brian Bast, an assistant clinical professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery in the School of Dentistry and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon at UCSF Medical Center. Over 120 students came out to enjoy Gordo’s burritos and listen to Dr. Bast speak about his career and personal life.
Dr. Bast began by explaining what is most important to him in his life, including family, working hard, and being fearless. He described the kinds of surgeries he performs or oversees, his teaching responsibilities, and the enjoyment he receives from his career. It was insightful to hear about the path he took to get to where he is today. Highlights included his surfing days and change in appearance after the many years of school. A typical day was depicted, with real cases integrated into the discussion. Dr. Bast’s passion for career and family, humor and a portrayal of what it’s like to be an oral and maxillofacial surgeon made the event a huge success. Students approached me afterwards to remark on how much they enjoyed listening to Dr. Bast. ADEA would like to thank OCPD for their contribution to the event and Dr. Bast for taking the time to enlighten dental students.
