“Yoga is a meditation that has taught me that being tender, open, and present is beautiful. My yoga practice takes me beyond the physical, to a place where I can find awareness in the mind.
“Even though UCSF was my first choice for medical school, the decision to come here was a difficult one. I was raised in an Iranian-American, Jewish community and grew up attending all-girl Orthodox schools.
“I have recently found myself at a curious intersection between privilege and disadvantage.
“In addition to the challenge of learning how to teach, I went through an identity crisis. I had to go from being a carefree college student to a responsible role model, and I was woefully unprepared.
“I had an unconventional path to medicine, a career direction I never considered as recently as five years ago.
