Synapse Seeks Editor-in-Chief

Synapse — UCSF Student Voices, UCSF’s 62-year-old student news outlet, is seeking an editor-in-chief or a team of co-editors-in-chief. No previous experience is necessary.

The news outlet is independently run by students for students and is guided by a professional advisor with 17 years in the media industry. This is an excellent opportunity to hone leadership skills.

Synapse is devoted to providing a platform for any content created by UCSF students across all genres: science, opinion editorials, news, fiction, poetry, performance/restaurant reviews, sports, arts, humor etc.

The position will begin mid-August 2019, allowing a period of transition before the current editor-in-chief, Ariane Panzer, steps down from the position. It will have an initial term of one year.

The position requires a minimum commitment of 10 hours per month. A $250 stipend per month will be granted to the right candidate(s).

The responsibilities of editor-in-chief or co-editors-in-chief will be:

  • Serving as the face of Synapse
  • Recruiting and managing outreach to students and student groups in the various schools
  • Defining editorial policy
  • Leading a vibrant social media presence
  • Attending Synapse’s bi-weekly, hour-long editorial meetings
  • Writing one article per month (except during holidays)
  • Pitching story ideas to contributors

To apply, please send a resume and cover letter telling us:

  • Why you would like to serve as Synapse’s Editor-In-Chief
  • Your ideas for recruiting student contributors to Synapse
  • Your plan for creating a lively social media presence
  • Your vision for Synapse in the coming year

Please send your application to [email protected] with the subject line "Editor-in-Chief Application." The deadline to apply is July 12.
