Last Lecture: Spotlight on the Best

For the sixth year in a row, UCSF students have chosen the professor they most want to hear answer the question, “If you had one lecture to give, what would you say?” Join the Graduate & Professional Student Association, Student Life and the Alumni Association on Thursday, April 13 at 5:30 p.m. in Cole Hall as Dr. Howard Pinderhughes shares his experiences that have brought him to UCSF today at the 2017 Last Lecture.

Dr. Pinderhughes is associate professor and chair of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the UCSF School of Nursing, and a UCSF postdoc alumnus. His research focuses on prevention of youth violence and on factors contributing to health disparities among poor and working class urban communities.

He is the author of Race in the Hood: Conflict and Violence Among Urban Youth, which examines the dynamics of racial violence in New York City. His forthcoming book, Dealing With Danger: How Inner City Youth Cope With the Violence that Surrounds Them, which explores the experience of violence and trauma among urban youth and their communities in the Bay Area.

Last Lecture series are prominent on many college campuses, made especially popular by Randy Pausch, a Carnegie Mellon professor whose famous lecture, tragically, was his last having just been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer.

In Spring 2012, the inaugural UCSF Last Lecture received a warm and welcoming response. This year the student-initiated event will continue to build the tradition. This lecture year’s lecture will bring out stories intertwining various dimensions of the chosen faculty member's trajectory — encompassing the professional, personal, spiritual, and cultural experiences that have brought them to where they are today.
