A Letter from the Vice Chancellor, Diversity and Outreach
Diversity—a defining feature of California’s past, present, and future—refers to the variety of personal experiences, values, and world views that arise from differences of culture and circumstance. Such differences include race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, language, abilities/disabilities, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, and geographic region, and more.
UC Definition of Diversity
I am pleased to welcome you to the Office of Diversity and Outreach at UCSF. The Office serves as the campus leader in building diversity in all aspects of the UCSF mission through ongoing assessment, development of new programs, and building consensus. We collaborate with the medical centers and hospital teaching sites to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion across all groups on campus.
The mission of the Office is to build a broadly diverse faculty, student, trainee and staff community, to nurture a culture that is welcoming and supportive, and to engage diverse ideas for the provision of culturally competent education, discovery, and patient care. My priority is to develop and execute a comprehensive strategic plan for diversity and outreach that supports UCSF’s mission of advancing health worldwide, and the recruitment and retention of talented employees and students who contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.
The goal of the Office is to provide outstanding and culturally competent resources and services to UCSF and the community. Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity, LGBT Resource Center, Sexual Harassment Prevention and Resolution, University Community Partnerships, and the Multicultural Resource Center comprise the Office. These centralized services bolster and foster collaboration, improve our effectiveness and serve as a cornerstone for cultural transformation on our campus.
In addition, the Office serves as a central resource on campus where internal and external community members can easily find news and updates about activities and programs taking place, and learn how to get involved. We provide educational and culturally enriching events taking place at UCSF throughout the year. I invite you to attend these events and engage in a dialogue directly with our office, publicly or privately. You may also subscribe to our diversity listserv and join our Facebook page by visiting diversity.ucsf.edu.
I invite you to attend our events throughout the month of October focused on diversity and building community. The new Multicultural Resource Center will have its grand opening celebration on October 24 from 4-6 p.m., with food, music and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Center serves as a resource for students, trainees, faculty, and staff, with a focus on underrepresented minorities, mentoring and interprofessional collaboration. Please visit our website for a full listing of events.
The Office of Diversity and Outreach is a place where all members of the campus community are free to voice their concerns, collaborate and celebrate differences. I invite you to partner with me in making UCSF an even greater institution, which welcomes and supports all groups and serves as a gateway to resources and opportunities. I am privileged and honored to serve in this important role and to be of service to UCSF and the community. Please feel free to contact my office any time at (415) 476-7700.
Sincerely,
J. Renee Navarro, PharmD, MD
