UCSF Rallies for Dreamers
UCSF health professional students, trainees, faculty, staff, administrators, and unions joined in a rally at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital on Tuesday, Feb. 6 to stand up for immigrants.
The demonstration was a response to the Trump Administration’s threats to sanctuary cities nationwide, recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, the repeal of Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and the abandonment of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) recipients.
“Migration is a human right,” stated the organizers’ press release. “There are many in our community who are affected by the recent attack on sanctuary cities, ICE raids, repeal of TPS, abandonment of DREAMERS, and horrific conditions of immigration detention centers.”
Attendees shared their first-hand accounts of undocumented status, DACA revocation, and TPS rescindment.
“As healthcare providers, we resist the rhetoric of fear and walls with visions of love and a world without borders,” stated the release. “We gather to show our support, learn about the ongoing struggles in our city, and mobilize together.”
Organizers called for the passage of a clean DREAM Act and for support of DACA recipients, who face possible deportation after the March 5 government deadline. Speakers urged that quality language services be treated as a human right that must be provided to achieve health equity.
Co-organizers of the rally included the ZSFGH Pediatrics department, ZSFGH Family Medicine Department, UCSF White Coats for Black Lives, Instituto Familiar de la Raza, Do No Harm Coalition, Mujeres Unidas y Activas, Committee of Interns and Residents/Service Employees International Union, American Academy of Pediatrics - California, Children Now, and Clínica Martín-Baró.
