This Date in UCSF History: Four Free Speech Campus Areas Designated
Originally published in Synapse on February 17, 1965.
As a result of recent action on the part of The Regents and consultation with student and faculty groups, Chancellor Saunders has designated certain campus areas which may be used by students and staff for “planning, implementing, raising funds, and recruiting participants for lawful off-campus action.”
The indoor area west of the elevators on the second floor of the Medical Sciences Building may be used for such purposes as distributing literature and raising funds. The outdoor patio near the library has been designated as an open discussion area in which meetings may be held at will.
Two other locations have been designated for student use, but these require prior reservation. They are the Women's Lounge (north) in Millberry Union and the Steninger Gym.
A truly suitable open discussion area will be available for the first time in the form of a new plaza which is scheduled to be created upon the demolition of the Old Medical School Building.
More detailed information in open discussion areas may be obtained from the Dean of Students Office.
