Making Science Accessible: Jennifer Frazier on Reaching a Broad Audience

Tuesday, April 15, 2025

Synapse was pleased to welcome Dr. Jennifer Frazier as our guest for the 7th annual Synapse Science Speaker series on April 9.

Frazier, a science communicator, UCSF alumna and adjunct professor, discussed the importance of engaging the public with science using examples from her experiences as a Senior Scientist and Curator at the Exploratorium and designer of public science experiences for the Science Communication Lab.

Frazier highlighted the unique benefits of museums, such as providing hands-on experiences with scientific tools and opportunities to meet real scientists.

She also emphasized that there are many ways to engage with the public beyond traditional museum exhibits or documentaries, including social media, everyday interactions, and community events.

Frazier presents a framework for effective science communication, stressing the importance of setting clear goals, understanding the target audience, and choosing appropriate mediums for engagement.

One successful effort was Exploratorium's work to engage Latinx communities — the exhibition led to an observable spike in Latinx audience members and increased feelings of welcome and engagement.

When tailoring exhibits or programs to specific audiences and choosing appropriate mediums, designers should consider several factors, including age, cultural background, and prior knowledge, Frazier said.

She shared her experiences and offered advice on how to develop activities and gain experience in the field, and provided resources for internships and fellowships, emphasizing the importance of showing commitment to the field.
