Contrasts: Mumbai at Sunset
I took this photo in Mumbai this summer, on my first trip to India. What surprised me most about Mumbai, more than the constant honking, or the sheer, teeming magnitude of the city, was its juxtaposition of poverty and prosperity. Slums like this one sit in the shadow of high-rises, and women cross the street to work in homes towering over them. In the United States, I think we often physically isolate impoverished communities, making it easier to ignore and perpetuate inequality. In Mumbai, however, there is no space to overlook them.
