Embracing A Diverse UCSF
We welcome all.
As Vice Chancellor of Diversity and Outreach, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all new and returning members of our campus community.
Chancellor Hawgood states: “Diversity is a defining feature of UC San Francisco and a source of strength that is critical to our success. Our differences — of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, socioeconomic status, abilities, experience and more — enhance our ability to achieve our core missions of research, teaching, patient care and public service.”
UCSF established the Office of Diversity and Outreach in 2010 to build a more diverse, inclusive and equitable campus. Our charge is to nurture a culture that generates diverse ideas for the provision of culturally competent education, discovery, patient care and community engagement — all in service of UCSF’s goal of advancing health worldwide.
My office provides support for all members of our community, including first generation, LGBT, people with disabilities, underrepresented minorities, women, undocumented individuals and others in our campus. Specifically, we work to increase diversity and improve equity through assessment and analysis, program development and collaboration with colleagues across UCSF and UCSF Health. Please visit our website to learn more about the programs that we administer: Advancing Excellence in Faculty Recruitment; Center for Science Education and Outreach; Confidential CARE Advocate; Education and Training; LGBT Resource Center; Multicultural Resource Center; and the Office for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination.
The Office of Diversity and Outreach also supports student advocacy efforts, and I encourage you to get involved in groups that may of be interest, such as UCSF White Coats 4 Black Lives and Graduate and Professional Dream Advocates (GAPDA). Last year’s Defending DACA Forum is a stellar example of students coming together with others in the UCSF community to exchange ideas about an issue of high importance to all of us.
This year we are pleased to host a number of events which I invite you to attend. Fall is particularly busy, so check the UCSF Calendar of Events and our website for additional events and details:
- October is Diversity Month at UCSF, and celebrations, gatherings, and other meetings are held. These include Coming Out Monologues, First Generation to College Welcome Dinner, International Pronouns Day, National Coming Out Day, Latinx Heritage Month Mixer, Queer and Trans People of Color, and others.
- The Annual Health Disparities Research Symposium will be held on Friday, October 12.
- October is also National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. UCSF is holding a Sexual Violence Conference as well as other events.
- Further ahead, the Chancellor’s Leadership Forum for Diversity and Inclusion is scheduled for April 25, 2019. Attending the forum is an excellent opportunity to learn about diversity, equity and inclusion across UCSF and engage the Chancellor’s Cabinet members.
In addition, I invite you to join the Diversity listserv. To subscribe send a message to listserv@listsrv.ucsf.edu. The one line of the message should read: Subscribe UCSFDiversity first name last name.
I hope that this will be a productive, illuminating and happy year for all of you.
