Enjoy The Little Things
Third place winner of the Synapse Storytelling Contest photography category, Kamelia Mehershahi’s sweet family portrait of a grown and baby turtle sunning on a rock soothes the soul in these turbulent times. Titled Enjoy the Little Things, her photograph is a gentle reminder to slow down, observe — or even seek out — the moments that make life pleasurable.
One afternoon, while I was taking a walk in the complex where I lived in Sacramento, I noticed this adorable moment where I got to capture a heartwarming photograph where a mother turtle teaches her baby turtle the motions for sunbathing and accompanies her in this activity. They both seemed content, relaxed, and enjoying their time together on a rock in a pond.
The turtle family reminded me that life is all about enjoying small things and simple moments like this. Taking baby steps every day towards learning to appreciate those small things in life which involve focusing our attention on what is nurturing for the human soul and not on things that are annoying or hurtful. It’s about doing those little things in life with our family that would have the biggest and positive impact on our lives.
The truth of the matter is that true joy lies in appreciating and practicing gratitude for the small things that we have in life that often we take for granted or miss altogether. I will end this with a quote stated by Winnie the Pooh “Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in our heart.’
