I glanced across the road
at my reflection. the way she looked hazy,
i doubted she was real. swathed in mist, and
illuminated by the lamppost, she stood motionless.
the crevices of the road splintered.
my soul shivered. — self.
Sonia Targ is an MD candidate in the UCSF School of Medicine, with expected degree conferral in spring 2023. She grew up in Palo Alto and attended Stanford University for her undergraduate education and master's degree in bioengineering. Her interest in poetry began in childhood and has persisted to this very day. Notable physician-poets such as William Carlos Williams and John Keats inspire her to keep up with her poetic pursuits despite the challenges of medical school. In her poetry, Sonia enjoys exploring the theme of the mind and its ability to interpret the world in all its multidimensional complexity. In her poem "Triptych," she creates almost an optical illusion of a poem. While the poem can be read as three separate columns, it can also be read across as a single larger paragraph.
