Synapse Seeks Editor-in-Chief

Synapse — UCSF Student Voices, UCSF’s 70-year-old student news outlet, is seeking an editor-in-chief or two co-editors-in-chief who would share duties. No previous publishing experience is necessary. 

Synapse is an independently an online publishing platform and newsletter with more than 3,000 subscribers that is run by and for UCSF students, guided by an advisor with 25 years experience in print and audio journalism.

Synapse is devoted to providing a platform for any content created by UCSF students across all genres: science, opinion, news, fiction, poetry, photography, reviews, nonfiction, arts, humor, audio, etc.

The editor-in-chief(s) will have an initial term of one year and typically requires a minimum commitment of 10 hours per month. On-boarding will begin in late-August 2025. A $250 stipend per month will be granted to the right candidate(s).

Responsibilities:

  • Serving as the face of Synapse
  • Recruiting students and reaching out to student groups in the various schools
  • Determining Synapse’s editorial direction
  • Attending bi-weekly editorial meetings
  • Pitching story ideas to the managing editor and to contributors
  • Contributing two submissions per quarter
