For the Birds

Tuesday, September 23, 2025

On August 24, the Birdwatching Club (BWC) at UCSF embarked on its inaugural birding adventure at Las Gallinas Ponds in San Rafael, CA. This event marks a significant milestone for BWC, which seeks to cultivate a passion for birdwatching, advocate for nature conservation, and enhance spiritual well-being through deep connections with the natural world.

Leadership and Vision

The session was expertly led by Dr. Ho, a passionate birder, nature photographer, and professor at the UCSF School of Dentistry. Joining him was Craig Sutkin, a second-year dental student and the founder of BWC. Together, they guided participants through the rich avian landscape, sharing insights and fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world. Additional supporting board members present at the event included David Forero (wildlife photographer), Amjad Kanj (head of finance), and Devansh Sapovadia (officer of outreach and advocacy).

A Commitment to Conservation and Wellness

The BWC is an interprofessional ornithological club dedicated to nurturing a love for birdwatching while promoting the conservation of avian species. The club welcomes bird enthusiasts of all levels, from novices to seasoned birders, creating a supportive environment for sharing knowledge, experiences, and a passion for the diverse birdlife that inhabits our planet.

In addition to its focus on birdwatching, the club places a strong emphasis on physical and spiritual wellness through connecting with nature. BWC encourages members to not only appreciate the beauty of avian life, but also to cultivate mindfulness. There is a strong sense of peace that comes from immersion in the natural world. Birding invites participants to immerse themselves fully in the present moment, allowing them to appreciate the intricate details of their surroundings and the fleeting beauty of each bird they encounter.

A Day of Discovery

During the trip to Las Gallinas Ponds, members were treated to a stunning display of avian life. The group spotted a variety of beautiful birds, including mute swans, red-winged blackbirds, Anna’s hummingbirds, pelicans, black-crowned night herons, snowy egrets, and even the elusive least bittern. The least bittern, a rare small heron found in wetland habitats, was a highlight of the day, showcasing the unique biodiversity that the area has to offer.

Looking Ahead

The successful launch of the Birdwatching Club at UCSF sets the stage for future excursions and events aimed at fostering a deeper connection with nature and promoting conservation efforts. As the club continues to grow, it will undoubtedly inspire more individuals to appreciate the beauty of birdwatching and the importance of protecting our feathered friends. With a shared commitment to exploration, education, and conservation, the BWC is poised to make a meaningful impact on the UCSF community and beyond.
