When I began full time research after choosing a lab and starting the second year of my PhD program, I found that one of the most difficult transitions was learning how to think of the long-term life of a project and not simply focus on the next one or two experiments. This shot from a hike up Mount Hoffmann in Yosemite National Park reminds me of that shift in mindset. While the pillar in the foreground is striking, it is only when the viewer looks to the distance that they will find the magnificent Half Dome looming over the Yosemite valley.
