The 5thannual Grad Slam competition is coming up on Thursday, March 21, 4 – 6 p.m., in Genentech Hall at Mission Bay. It will also be live-stream to Parnassus, where a handful of volunteers are needed. If you have some time to spare that afternoon, your help would be appreciated.

This event is hosted by the Graduate Division, but always with significant, much-appreciated support from SAA colleagues. If you would like to help out, please fill out this brief online form.

Grad Slam (or Postdoc Slam) is a communications competition in which 7-10 UCSF PhD students present their research in three minutes or less, using language we can all understand.

A panel of five judges andthe audience choose their favorites, who will win cash prizes. Read about last year's event.

Organizers need your helpto make the whole event happen successfully. Volunteers will do things like hand out programs, mind the auditorium doors during the competition, count the ballots for the “people’s choice award,” run around with handheld mics during the trivia contest, staff the check-in table and overflow room, etc.

While organizers will still need most volunteers at Mission Bay, a few volunteers are needed to staff the remote viewing location at Parnassus.

After your shift is up, you are welcome to stay for the reception afterwards, during which the winners will be announced. (There will also be a small reception at Parnassus.)

The program will start promptly at 4 p.m., but we’d ask you to arrive by 3:30 p.m., and to stay at least until the student talks are over (about 5 p.m.).

The reception will wind down by 6 p.m.

If you would like to volunteer, please fill out this brief online form, and you’ll be contacted in March with more details and volunteer assignments.
